I. WHAT IS THE TEACHING AND LEARNING ACADEMY?
The Teaching and Learning Academy (TLA) is a community of practice that helps participants develop and apply evidence-based and anti-racist teaching practices to improve student learning, in all courses, and especially in gateway or introductory courses.
The TLA is designed to be an inclusive experience, providing multiple points of entry and opportunities for synchronous and asynchronous engagement. The TLA includes a signature course focused on anti-racist and inclusive practices, a community of practice, self-paced modules, online resources, and webinars.
In this 12 minute video Dr. Stephanie M. Foote takes you through all you need to know about joining the Teaching and Learning Academy.
II.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE TLA?
The TLA is designed for anyone who cares about teaching and learning
The TLA experience is designed to intentionally introduce participants to evidence-based approaches that can be used in course design (or redesign) toward the goal of closing equity gaps in course outcomes. While participants in the TLA often focus on gateway courses, we welcome faculty (full- or part-time), staff, administrators, or teaching assistants (graduate or undergraduate), from any discipline or course level, to participate in the TLA. Ultimately, the TLA provides a community for the wide variety of individuals who are engaged or wish to be engaged in this type of work.
If you are at an institution currently involved in the Gateways to Completion (G2C) process, you may be eligible to participate in the TLA. Please email info@jngi.org to confirm eligibility and receive instructions for participation.
The year-long Teaching and Learning Academy process includes the following:
The TLA provides a supportive, interdisciplinary community
First and foremost, the TLA is a supportive community of practice that includes a broad range of participants and is facilitated by internationally renowned teaching and learning experts that we refer to as Fellows. Since the inception of the TLA in 2016, we have engaged full- and part-time faculty and staff from across the disciplines, as well as graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants, peer assistants, and faculty development and teaching and learning center professionals. As a result, hundreds of courses have been redesigned, all toward the goal of closing equity gaps in gateway course outcomes. To learn more about this course redesign work, we invite you to review the G2C Case Study Anthology collection.
The evidence-based teaching practices in the TLA can be applied immediately
Through the signature course, a community of practice, and a variety of online resources, participants in the TLA will learn about evidence-based teaching practices that they will then apply in their own course design or redesign. The teaching practices can also be applied in settings outside of the classroom (e.g., academic advising, tutoring, peer-embedded assistance, and in first-year and other new student programs) to foster student learning and belonging.
As a participant in the TLA, you will have year-long access to the following:
1. TLA Signature Course- offered annually and available on-demand after the course ends
2. Videos and online resources
3. Webinars
4. Community of practice meetings
5. Modules focused on aspects of course design/redesign
